Jannik Sinner’s return to the Italian Open couldn’t have been more impressive for the home crowd. The world No. 1 made his debut on Saturday with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 victory over Austria’s Sebastian Ofner, advancing to the round of 32.

The atmosphere at the Foro Italico was electric, with Italian fans eager to see Sinner claim the only missing Masters 1000 title in his collection. Delivering with authority, the San Candido native controlled the match from the start.

Ofner showed flashes of quality, especially with his serve and aggressive net play, but was ultimately outmatched by the in-form Sinner. The Austrian was still seeking his first win over a top-10 opponent.

Sinner dominated from start to finish, with the stadium erupting in celebration after every point. His parents were in attendance for what became a special night in Italian tennis.

The match saw two brief interruptions when fans needed medical attention, but it didn’t disrupt Sinner’s rhythm.

Beyond the win, Sinner made clear his ultimate goal: completing the “Career Golden Masters” by winning all nine Masters 1000 events—a feat achieved only by Novak Djokovic so far.

“In a year, many things can change,” he said after the match, sending a message of ambition to the Italian public.

The victory also ties Sinner with Roger Federer’s record of 29 consecutive Masters 1000 match wins, and he now has his sights set on Djokovic’s 31-match streak.

Italy hasn’t seen a local champion in Rome for 50 years, since Adriano Panatta’s title in 1976. With Carlos Alcaraz absent and Novak Djokovic eliminated early, Sinner’s path looks favorable—though threats remain from Alexander Zverev, Rafa Jódar, and Flavio Cobolli.

Sinner, who arrives in Rome fresh from consecutive titles in Paris 2025, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid, will next face either Alexei Popyrin or Jakub Mensik.
