The SC Freiburg will have to postpone their European travel plans for next season. Just three days after securing a spot in the Europa League final, a fatigued Breisgau side suffered a deserved 2-3 (1-1) defeat against Hamburger SV on Saturday. As a result, they missed the chance to clinch early European qualification on the penultimate matchday of the Bundesliga. Despite the loss, Freiburg (44 points) still hold the best chance in the three-way battle with Eintracht Frankfurt (43) and FC Augsburg (43) for the crucial seventh place ahead of the season finale against RB Leipzig.
Before 57,000 spectators at the sold-out Volksparkstadion (17th sellout of the season), Bakery Jatta (14th minute) gave HSV the lead, but Igor Matanovic (16th) equalized shortly after. After the break, Luka Vuskovic (64th) and Fábio Baldé (67th) scored to secure HSV’s sixth home victory of the campaign. Matanovic (87th) pulled one back late on, but it was not enough.
For HSV, this home fixture carried no pressure. The Bundesliga returnees had already secured their top-flight status a week earlier, allowing them to play freely exactly one year after promotion. Freiburg coach Julian Schuster made just two changes to his side following the grueling 3-1 Europa League semifinal second-leg win over SC Braga. Similarly, HSV made only two alterations to their lineup.
Notably, the outstanding defensive leader Vuskovic returned to the starting eleven for what was likely his final home game with the club. HSV players warmed up wearing special T-shirts featuring the slogan “Hamburg can host big games,” referencing the city’s Olympic referendum on May 31. While neither side delivered a truly great performance, the match remained entertaining.
Freiburg applied early pressure, but Vuskovic once again stood firm as a defensive rock for Hamburg, single-handedly denying clear-cut chances. Jatta’s opening goal came somewhat against the run of play, as he scored his first Bundesliga goal from close range. However, Hamburg’s joy was short-lived. Just two minutes later, former St. Pauli man Matanovic netted his ninth league goal of the season to level the score.
An open contest followed, with attacking moves at both ends. Both teams showed visible effort to impose structure. The most dangerous moment came from HSV’s creative force Fábio Vieira, who hit the post with a shot. Remarkably, the match was paused for ten minutes midway through the first half due to a medical emergency in HSV’s Nordkurve. Fans from both sides showed sensitivity during two further incidents before and after halftime.
HSV came out stronger after the break, while Freiburg appeared to run out of steam following their European exertions. Hamburg created increasingly promising opportunities: Freiburg’s Matthias Ginter made a last-ditch block to deny HSV’s young striker Otto Stange (47th), and Ransford Königsdörffer (52nd) narrowly missed from twelve meters in front of goal. Lukas Kübler (51st) tested HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes in between, but the visitors struggled to create clear chances.
The decisive moment came from Vuskovic (64th), who put Hamburg back in front. Shortly after, substitute Baldé (67th) sealed the victory. Freiburg had little response, though Matanovic did manage a second goal (87th) to narrow the gap. Vieira struck the post again for HSV (90+5).
