Saracens secured a six-try victory against a depleted Bristol Bears side, marking their tenth consecutive win and significantly enhancing their chances of finishing in the Premiership’s top four.
Capitalizing on Bristol’s defensive lapses at Ashton Gate, Saracens ran in four tries within a 13-minute first-half burst. Tom Willis, Hugh Tizard, Rotimi Segun, and Ben Earl all crossed the line, with Fergus Burke adding a fifth try. Bristol responded through tries from Fitz Harding, Harry Thacker, Matias Moroni, and Kalaveti Ravouvou, but Tobias Elliott’s last-minute score sealed the win for Saracens.
The visitors, currently in sixth place, have closed the gap to just two points behind Exeter and Bristol, with the Bears’ bonus point moving them up to fourth.
Bristol had brought in emergency cover by signing Fred Davies from Doncaster Knights, but it was their captain Harding who struck first, bursting over from a line-out on the right. Saracens equalized with a Burke penalty before Willis touched down from a rolling maul to take an 8-7 lead. Tizard pirouetted over for another try, but Thacker emerged from a maul to make it 15-12.
A series of missed tackles from Bristol allowed Burke to break through and set up Segun for a simple score. Three minutes later, Earl added Saracens’ fourth try, securing a bonus point. However, Saracens momentarily switched off, allowing Moroni to touch down and reduce the lead to 29-19.
Saracens responded with their fifth try just before halftime when prop Jamie George delivered a stunning pass for Burke to score. The second half was more subdued, though Bristol sensed an opportunity after Theo McFarland was sin-binned for pulling down a maul. Joe Batley narrowly avoided a red card for a head-on-head clash with Maro Itoje, and Ravouvou scored on the left to cut the deficit to 34-26 with seven minutes remaining.
Itoje received a yellow card, and Ravouvou had a second try disallowed for a knock-on in a tense finish. But Ravouvou was then sin-binned, and Saracens’ Elliott intercepted a pass as Bristol attempted to run the ball from their own 22, sealing a win that keeps Saracens firmly in playoff contention.
**Bristol Reaction**
Pat Lam, Bristol’s director of rugby, told BBC Radio Bristol: “There were many positives in what we did, but our line-out, usually a strength, let us down. They exploited that area. After kick-off, we had players out of position, and they opened up gaps, which turned the game. In the second half, we defended better and didn’t concede until the final try. I thought we scored a great try and were unlucky that the TMO ruled it out. Against Saracens, it’s about small moments, and unfortunately, we had moments where we switched off and got punished.”
**Saracens Reaction**
Mark McCall, Saracens’ director of rugby, said: “In the first half, we were excellent with the ball in attack and very confrontational, but we gave them a couple of gifts. It was frustrating that the halftime score wasn’t more reflective of our dominance. I’m proud of how we looked overall.”
